Thank you for the birthday wishes. It's been over a year since I was in the classroom last and so many memories have come back to echo in my days like unforgettable favorite songs.
A remarkable year it has been, one where I delivered my first Keynote Address, at the International Brain and Learning Conference, in Mexico City, 20 million people, what an exciting city to visit!
During my presentation, I told those in attendance:
"All that I know, I learned from my students."
I told them of your heroic work and that
as a teacher, I had so much to learn, and that you taught me so well.
You were one of my most excellent and inspirational tutors. You raised me up.
We crossed many rivers together.
I thought of you earlier this week when I came across this video because of the way you inspired my work.
Way back when you were in my classroom, you might remember me saying:
"Who among you will be our moral leaders, our models of enlightenment,
if not you,
then who?"
Many of you now have children of your own and are steeped in the joys and the day to day responsibilities around your kids. Parent or not I remind you that our world is becoming better and you are an essential part of that movement through those children and those whom you touch.
This is a tribute to what I learned from your presence in my life. Viewing this video clip through to 3 minutes and 30 seconds will give you a sense of the depth of the inspiration you've visited upon my life. Thank you. -- Toby
One last thought:
Remember discussing evolution in my Biology class?
We humans, are evolving as a species. A thousand years from now, our remote descendants will look up into their sparkling starry night and be thankful that you were
who you are
and accomplished what you have.
They will be thankful for the the little things done by you each day that moved us, one millimeter at a time, though our perilous infancy, through our humble beginnings.
This is what they'll see,
looking back from the future:
Thank you for helping us find our way.
You remain in my thoughts with respect, admiration, love, and affection.
Toby
